red plastic radio

i had a little red plastic radio
with an earplug that i could fit in one ear
i used to listen to it in the evening or late at night
sometimes in the summer i would go out into the yard
and feel the damp grass on my bare feet
i had to be careful closing the screen door not to wake anybody up
you had to open the radio right up to change the nine volt battery
i learned how to check an old battery for any remaining voltage with my tongue
lying on my back on the picnic table i could see a thousand stars
that was when i was beginning middle school
i had earned the radio as a prize with my paper route
by successfully knocking on doors to collect for a weekly that was actually free
i still have the small trophy for the top carrier club
and the big steel basket from the back of my old bike

hanging out in the park
in the afternoon or after dark
dewy summer mornings, frosty winter days
fireworks at the back of the garden at the end of spring
to celebrate the queen
burning down the schoolhouse as the summer's just about to start
call on all the neighbours, grab the bats and gloves
a little pickup football touch turns to shove
tadpoles in the pond and some running birds
once we saw a pheasant, once we saw a fox
when they put in the high-rise had to check our locks
kids would wander past that we'd not seen before
just starting high school met some pretty girls
sitting on a bench with their cares to the world
took them skating at the rink and sometimes walked them home
tracy sat on my lap and i kept her warm
one late november evening and our hearts were torn
she snuck out sometimes and we'd talk until dawn
why's the grass all wet, has it been raining
no, that's just dew
don't want to talk to you
you're always teasing me and think i don't know
the talk with tracy that i miss the most
was the time she told me that she got too close
and she was at my window just the night before
hanging out in the park
in the afternoon or after dark
dewy summer mornings, frosty winter days

i had a dream about… …bean water and sugar dough
played my heart out for the maple leafs
won the cup and earned celebrity
money's now the only thing i need
i'll get rich selling…
spent a lot of time out on the road
winter nights can get a little cold
stale dry doughnuts and a cup of joe
put my name on…
i'll be remembered for...

past loop station alpha
where the stars glow cold
light years out and never coming home
see the engines sputter
feel the rocket glide
suited up and strapped in for the ride
at the distant fringes
of the great beyond
no transmissions, no one knows you're gone
past loop station alpha
where the stars glow cold
light years out and never coming home

drugs and women, women and drugs
will drop you right down to the floor or else pull out the rug
how'd you get here? i heard bob ask doug
it's one thing or the other: women or drugs
thirty-five years straight and clean but holding for a friend
his ex-wife doesn't like it so he's back in jail again
a sixty year-old rasta with dreds down to the ground
had a bit of weed on him so it's off to the pound
drugs and women, women and drugs
will empty out that cup of cheer and land you in the jug
how'd you get here? i heard bob ask doug
it's one or the other, either women or drugs
a little kind old hindu with twelve kids from one spouse
had been in once before and been booted from his house
his wife called him back over, said that there were bills to pay
he asked her kindly for his ID now they've thrown the key away
drugs and women, women and drugs
lying in the gutter or snug as a bug
how'd you get here? i heard bob ask doug
it's that one thing or that other thing, either women or drugs
a young soft-spoken fellow, a clean-cut ladies man
dumped his gal on saturday, come monday in the can
as he was getting hauled away she ran up to his door
don't drag him off to jail! she cried, but that's what jails are for
drugs and women, women and drugs
put 'em in your pipe and smoke 'em, or offer them a hug
how'd you get here? i heard bob ask doug
well it was either that one thing or the other, women or drugs
forget about the gangsters, those kids that play with guns
the menace to society that needs to be undone
is guys who can't get on at times with gals or kids or wives
and fellas who need substances to get on with their lives
drugs and women, women and drugs
lying in the gutter, or snug as a bug
how'd you get here? i heard bob ask doug
well it had to be that one or the other thing, women or drugs
i know it's not much of a song, not even much of a poem
but i'm talking now to every man who doesn't need a home
my advice for all of you who can't leave 'em well enough alone
is get a lawyer's number (tattooed) on your arm and hope he's by the phone
drugs and women, women and drugs
put 'em in your pipe and smoke 'em, or offer them a hug
how'd you get here? i heard bob ask doug
it was that one thing or the other, women or drugs
